List of all post Windows 7 and Windows 8 builds

Microsoft has been hard at work on builds of Windows 7 (post RTM) and Windows 8. While it is impossible to actually list every build compiled, we do have a list, from a reliable source of information that lists nearly all of the builds to date.

The information posted below comes from Winreview.ru who has a solid history of not only providing leaked information but also being accurate with their leaks as well. The list is broken down into Post Win 7 builds and Windows 8 builds. Windows 8 is broken down further into its milestone builds.

The list of builds represents Microsoft’s hard work towards completing the final product which has been rumored for both a January 2012 launch and a late 2012 launch. While there is more weight around a late 2012 launch some believe that the January 2012 launch may be with Windows 8 ARM based version for tablets.

Speed up Your Windows Vista Computer with ReadyBoost

In Windows Vista there is a new feature called ReadyBoost that lets you insert a flash drive or a memory card into the system then Windows will store the commonly used files for quicker access than turning off the hard drive. Mean it will create a Cache file to store the temporary files in the flash drive for serve you to open it again.

Turning this feature on is simple. Just put the flash drive, SD card, or whatever flash device you want into your computer. You’ll see this dialog pop up:

Click the “Speed up my system” link, and you’ll be taken to the ReadyBoost panel for the flash drive:

Just select Use this device, and set the amount of space you want to use. Windows will create what is essentially a paging file on the disk, and will use it for faster access.

You will see a cache file in ur flash drive as below:

Download Vlite

Install Windows Vista Lite from your Flash Drive

Open up an administrator mode command prompt by right-clicking on the shortcut and choosing Run as Administrator, then type in diskpart to load up the disk partitioning command line tool.

The most important step is to run the following command, which will give you the numbers of the disks, so you can use it in the next command (and not accidentally remove a partition on another drive).

list disk

Now that you know the correct number for the disk, you can use the select disk command, substituting the number 1 for whatever number your flash drive is set to:

select disk 1

Now you can run the rest of the commands, which will remove any partitions before creating a new FAT32 partition and setting it to active so it can boot.

clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=fat32
assign
exit

That final assign command will let you access the drive from Explorer, so we can copy the files. You’ll want to copy all of the files from your installation DVD or from the vLite folder over to your flash drive.

At this point you should be able to stick the USB drive in your computer and boot from it. Note that you might have to enable USB flash booting support in the BIOS, and often it helps to use the shortcut key for your BIOS boot menu.

Use a Batch File for Quickly Restarting explorer.exe

Explorer.exe is the user shell on your Windows system (taskbar, desktop, etc.) and periodically it requires a restart to resume proper functionality. Additionally, if you do a lot of tweaking to your system registry like I do, it’s much easier to restart explorer.exe to reload the registry instead of restarting the entire system. By creating a .bat file, you will have a quick 2 step solution that will restart explorer.exe and get you back to computing in just a few seconds.1. Open Notepad.

2. Copy and paste the following into the new document:

@echo off
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
explorer.exe

3. Save your document with a descriptive name such as restart_explorer.bat. Make sure to save the file with the .bat extension and not .txt.

The next time you need to restart explorer.exe, simply run the newly created .bat file and close the command window that appears.
